Tartu has roughly 90,000 people. By population logic it should not have a meaningful DnB scene. It does, and the scene is more dedicated per capita than Tallinn.
The structural conditions
University town. 20,000+ students, mostly aged 18-25, with limited disposable income but lots of available time. The classic conditions for an electronic music scene. The DnB-curious among them have nowhere else to go after midnight, so they show up.
The promoter pattern
A small group of local promoters program monthly DnB nights in venues that are otherwise rock bars or jazz clubs. SELECTA has occasionally tour-extended Tallinn bookings to Tartu the next night. The capacity is smaller but the energy can be higher.
Worth the trip
If you are in Tallinn and a SELECTA-adjacent night is happening in Tartu, the train is 2 hours and the night is genuinely different from the capital. Worth the experiment if you have not been.
