Sigma: The Brothers Who Charted

Cam Edwards and Joe Lenzie took drum and bass to UK number one. The how and why of the crossover are worth studying.

Sigma: The Brothers Who Charted

Sigma (Cam Edwards and Joe Lenzie) achieved something almost no other DnB project has: a UK number-one single. "Nobody to Love" topped the chart in 2014. The route they took is worth understanding even if you think the result is pop rather than serious DnB.

What they did differently

Sigma productions sample or reference famous melodic hooks that mainstream radio listeners already love. They build DnB structure underneath. The combination gives radio programmers something familiar enough to play and dance audiences something energetic enough to move to.

The chart result

Three top-10 singles in the UK over a four-year span. Album sales in territories where DnB has no underground presence. The chart success was real even if the underground refused to acknowledge it.

The aftermath

Sigma still tours and releases but the chart visibility has faded. Whether that is a creative choice or a market shift is unclear. The records they made at peak chart period remain a case study in mainstream-friendly DnB structure.
