Around 2005 to 2010, the dominant DnB sound in the UK was the "roller". Long, hypnotic, groove-focused tracks that prioritised continuity over drama. The genre had a clear identity. Then it almost vanished.
What a roller is
A DnB track built around a repeating bassline that runs for the full length of the record. Almost no traditional drop. Subtle variations rather than dramatic switches. Engineered to mix into other rollers seamlessly, creating the illusion of one continuous endless track.
The producer roster
SCAR (Survival and DLR working as a duo), Survival solo, Need For Mirrors, the Dispatch Records roster. Most of these producers are still active. The roller catalogue is huge.
Why it faded
When neuro got loud around 2015, rollers started feeling tame by comparison. Promoters wanted drops; rollers do not give them. The audience drifted. But the records have aged extraordinarily well. They sound less dated now than the neuro records from the same period.
