Reading the room is the soft skill that separates working DJs from talented bedroom mixers. It is hard to teach but possible to learn. Here is the framework.
What to look at
Not the front row. The front row will dance to anything. Look at the back third of the room, between the dancefloor and the bar. That is where the marginal listener stands. If they are still there at 02:00, your set is working. If they have drifted to the smoking area, recalibrate.
The tell-tale signs
Heads down means the music is too repetitive. Phones up means you are playing something they want to share. Drinks down on the floor means everyone is committing to dance. Each is a feedback signal.
The pivot
When the room turns on you, pivot fast. Switch sub-genre, switch tempo, drop in something they know. The recovery is rarely graceful but it is always better than playing through to nothing.
