Marking "going" on an event you do not end up attending is more harmful than people realise. Especially in smaller scenes where promoter capacity planning relies on RSVP signals.
What promoters use RSVPs for
Door staff numbers, bar staffing levels, ice orders, taxi coordination at closing. A 200-person no-show on a 500 RSVP night creates real cost for the venue and stress for the staff. Promoters notice patterns.
When to mark "interested" instead
If you are not 80 percent sure you will be there, mark "interested" not "going". Interested means you are watching the event, you might come, you have not committed. Going should mean a real commitment. That distinction keeps the data honest.
How to back out
Change your RSVP to cancelled as soon as you know. Do it before doors open if possible. Most promoter systems use the cancellation to free up the slot for the standby list. Late cancellations are still better than no shows.
