Darkstep was the heaviest, darkest, most dystopian flavour of drum and bass during the 2002 to 2005 era. Black Sun Empire, Audio, Counterstrike, Limewax. Then the audience moved on and the records went into the deep archive. A small group of producers in 2025 are pulling them out again.
The original sound
Darkstep was techstep amplified. Tighter drums, deeper subs, more industrial samples. Where neuro of 2025 has clean precision, darkstep had grime and tape saturation. The records felt analogue even when they were entirely digital.
The revival signs
A handful of newer producers are releasing tracks that explicitly cite 2003 Black Sun Empire as a reference point. Younger crowds discovering the back catalogue through algorithm-driven recommendations. Small label nights themed on dark DnB history.
Where it could go
Probably never back to mainstage dominance. But a healthy side-scene with dedicated nights and a small but loud audience. The records have always rewarded the heads. The casual audience that left in 2008 is not coming back.
