Black Sun Empire formed in Utrecht in 1997. Three brothers, then a fourth member, then back to three. The catalogue spans almost three decades of dark European drum and bass. The peak years overlapped with Noisia and the two labels effectively defined the Dutch neuro export.

The sound signature

BSE records are immediately recognisable: high-tension bass design, dystopian atmospheres, drum patterns engineered for dancefloor impact rather than producer-listener admiration. Less surgical than late-period Noisia, more emotional, more concerned with mood.

The label work

Blackout Music, the BSE label, has released over a hundred records and developed careers including Mob Tactics, State of Mind, Audio. The roster overlap with Vision and Eatbrain made Blackout part of the broader European neuro infrastructure of the 2010s.

Now

BSE still tours and still releases. Their sets sit reliably in the harder-neuro side of European festival programming. A SELECTA booking would still pull a serious crowd.
