Atmospheric drum and bass was an early-mid 90s sub-genre dominated by LTJ Bukem, Photek, the Good Looking Records catalogue. It went quiet for two decades. The sound has crept back into 2025 production.
What atmospheric DnB sounds like
Sparse drums, ambient pad work, long mixes, jazz-influenced harmonic content. The mood is contemplative rather than aggressive. Think 02:00 chill room rather than 04:00 main room.
The current producers
Several newer producers are working in this territory: some Sublunar Records artists, certain Hospital Med School releases, scattered Bandcamp releases on small labels. The aesthetic has reformed without a flagship label.
Where to hear it
Sunday afternoon SELECTA programming when we experiment with side-genre nights. The warm-up slot at melodic-focused weekend events. Late-night closing sets when the crowd is small and curious rather than peak and hungry.
